How childhood trauma affects health across a lifetime | Nadine Burke Harris | TED
Childhood trauma isn’t something you just get over as you grow up. Pediatrician Nadine Burke Harris explains that the repeated stress of abuse, neglect and parents struggling with mental health or substance abuse issues has real, tangible effects on the development of the brain. This unfolds across a lifetime, to the point where those who’ve experienced high levels of trauma are at triple the risk for heart disease and lung cancer. An impassioned plea for pediatric medicine to confront the prevention and treatment of trauma, head-on. TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). TEDxSanAntonio - Alicia Maples - Recognizing Glass Children
Speaker: Alicia Maples About this talk: Having lost one brother to the world of autism and another to a terminal illness, Alicia Maples never knew a normal childhood. Expected to always put on a brave face, Alicia played the role of good girl on the outside. One the inside, however, she was dying. In this heart-wrenching talk, Alicia tells parents of children with special needs — and their surrounding community — to stop looking through the siblings of children with special needs. About Alicia Maples: Alicia Meneses Maples is an entrepreneur and small business consultant at Brilliant SMB. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. Meet Beth.
When Beth's 6-month-old adoptive daughter joined her family, Beth didn't know the trauma her baby has experienced had changed her brain chemistry. If she had the effective intervention they needed early on, Beth believes her daughter would be able to have healthy relationships. Instead, she is growing up in a boarding school, going through the motions until adulthood.
